Captioned Video Modules for Allergen Safety Training

Captioned video instruction can make allergen safety training accessible to Deaf and hard of hearing foodservice employees.

Allergen safety is a critical part of foodservice operations, yet standard training often relies on spoken explanations that leave out Deaf and hard of hearing staff. I believe an inclusive approach must give every employee an equivalent way to learn the same material.

Captioned video modules offer a practical solution. By presenting the same information in audio and synchronized text, these modules let Deaf and hard of hearing workers follow the instruction in real time. Captions also support other learners, since they reinforce key points and can be reviewed at a personal pace.

To put this into practice, I recommend that training designers add accurate, well timed captions to existing video content and use clear, concise language. Supporting visuals, such as icons for common allergens and step by step graphics, further improve comprehension. For employees whose first language is American Sign Language, captions alone may not be enough, and signed versions or an interpreter for live sessions should be part of the plan.

When training is truly accessible, staff confidence grows and safe practice becomes easier to sustain. Inclusive allergen training protects guests with food allergies and shows a real commitment to equity within the hospitality workforce.
